The Sabbath Day According to the Turfitts

Sunday, January 24, 2016

Ty slept all night. Mommy gets up to feed him at 6 a.m. and goes back to bed. Daddy lets mommy sleep in while he gets up to make pancakes. Daddy wakes mommy up at 7:30 a.m. and asks her to get Porter up. She obliges, grabs her robe and glasses and trudges up the stairs. Scout is waiting at the top of the stairs. She is very excited. Porter is awake already but still in bed. Mommy tells him that daddy is making pancakes, and he replies with "daddy make a mess." Mommy agrees.

Pancakes and deer sausage are hot and ready. We say grace and eat up. The pancakes taste funny. Daddy remembers he forgot to add salt. He sprinkles salt on his. We laugh. Mommy finishes eating and makes Ty's bottle because she knows he will be up soon. Right away she hears Ty cry.

She rushes to her bathroom to turn on her hair straightener. Daddy brings Porter upstairs to get him dressed. Mommy rushes up the stairs, opens the door and Ty is all smiles. She changes his poopy diaper and picks out his church clothes. Daddy brings Porter downstairs with him while he gets dressed. Mommy brings Ty downstairs. She lays him on her bed with his bottle while she styles her hair. Daddy goes to EE's to feed Winston because EE is out of town. Mommy finishes and so does Ty. She puts him in the pack-n-play with some toys. Porter also comes in to entertain. Mommy finishes getting dressed while daddy gets Ty dressed.

They get ready to leave. Mommy: We may need to bring a bottle for Ty. Daddy: Did you pack Porter some toys? Mommy: Does he have a blanket? Where are Porter's shoes? Daddy: I'll bring Ty to the car. Can you get Porter?

Porter is sitting in a chair watching cartoons on mommy's phone. Mommy makes Ty a bottle. She makes herself a bottle of water. She asks Porter if he is ready. He ignores her. She grabs his hand and helps him out of his chair. They walk to the car and she buckles him in. Daddy drives his truck and mommy drives hers with the kids. Daddy has to stay after to do clerk work.

They both back into parking spaces almost in sync. Mommy is unbuckling Porter and takes the phone away. She explains that they are going into church now and he can watch it later. He only whines once. Daddy unloads Ty. We walk through the parking lot as Porter picks out all the "Lightning McQueen" cars. Mommy tries to get Porter to walk faster by racing him to the chapel. He only falls for it once. We are actually early. We find Maw Maw in our usual pew in front of the Zahnisers. She hands Porter a bag of toys. He is excited about one racecar in particular and a police car that he calls a racecar. Mommy corrects him but notes that they do drive really fast sometimes.

The usual ensues. Porter is too loud and we ask him to be quiet. He obliges...for a few seconds. Ty tries to tear the pages out of the hymnal as we sing. Porter accidentally grabs two pieces of bread and one falls to the floor...he eats it anyway. Ty makes flirty eyes and smiles with everyone. Porter wants to be held during the intermediate hymn, and he gives mommy six or seven kisses. It is very hot and stuffy in the chapel. Porter throws stuff at the families behind us. Ty is passed to mommy and then to Maw Maw and then back to mommy. Porter has poopoo and mommy changes him. Ty is tired and whiny and daddy tries to coddle him to get him to sleep...it doesn't work. The closing prayer is said. Mommy and daddy devise a plan.

Daddy takes Porter to nursery and mommy brings Ty to class to try to rock him to sleep. Daddy comes later with all the stuff, i.e., the car seat, huge diaper bag, mommy's coat and water bottle. Daddy leaves to do clerk work. Ty falls asleep. Mommy tries to plan her lesson for young women's on her phone. It's not working out while trying to hold him. She makes a successful transfer to the car seat. She also tries to listen to the lesson. A very elderly man named Bro. Garriga sits on his rolling walker at the back of the class. He makes a comment about something found in the scriptures. The teacher (Uncle Brehm) asks him how many times he has read the Book of Mormon. He replies, "Oh, I don't know. I've lost count...but at least eight times last year." Mommy sits in awe and stares at him for a while.

Class is over. Mommy tries to bring Ty to daddy without waking him. It is unsuccessful. Daddy agrees to take him for a while "until he gets crazy." Mommy joins everyone in young women's. Daddy plugs away in the clerk's office. Daddy brings Ty to mommy at 11:45. He is acting crazy. She tries to finish her lesson with him whining and wriggling on her lap. It's not perfect, but she gets the job done. Closing prayer.

Mommy loads Ty up in the car seat and rushes to get Porter from nursery. She opens the door to the gym and he is scooting away on a little car. He wants to bring it home, and mommy explains that he has to leave it but he has his bike at home that he can ride. Mommy brings the kids home while daddy stays to work.

She parks at the house and unbuckles Porter, then unloads Ty's car seat. They all go inside. She turns The Incredibles on for Porter, makes Ty his bottle and gets him out of the car seat. She sets him up on the floor to eat. She runs to change her clothes and then begins making Porter some instant spaghetti and orange slices. He eats it at his kid's table shirtless while he watches the movie. She gets her lunch started, then Ty is crying. She brings him upstairs, rocks him for a little while and puts him down. She goes down and finishes making her lunch. Ty is crying. She wipes Porter's spaghetti mess up on her way upstairs. She rocks Ty again for a little while and lays him back down...he starts crying immediately. She decides to let him cry while she finishes eating lunch. Daddy comes home. She left everything out for him to fix lunch. She finishes her lunch and heads upstairs to rock Ty some more. He falls asleep.

Mommy comes downstairs and starts mixing some cookie dough. Daddy finishes his lunch, changes his clothes and brings Porter upstairs for his nap. He comes downstairs and helps mommy mix the cookie dough, then he starts on the dishes. She is finishing up and notices the dough looks too thin. She mentions this to him and he realizes he only put 1.25 cups of flour instead of 2.25 cups. She adds the remaining cup and puts the dough in the fridge to chill. They sit down together on the couch in front of the fire and snuggle up to watch a movie.

The movie is okay. After it's over, daddy decides to paint the ceilings in the new closet and pantry he just finished building. Mommy decides to go to EE's to load up the very last of their boxes from moving out a month ago. She is unloading them at home and Ty wakes up. She brings him downstairs where daddy is already mixing his bottle. She sets him up in front of the TV to watch Baby Einstein while he eats. She brings all eight boxes up the stairs one-by-one. She opens the door to Porter's room so he can wake up slowly. She begins unpacking some boxes. He eventually wakes up and she is there to tickle him. He asks to put on his costume. "Your monkey costume?" "No. My snow one." "Your Santa pajamas?" "Yeah!" Mommy gets them from the bathroom counter and gets him dressed.
We spend the rest of the day straightening up, making messes and straightening up again. Daddy cooks dinner and Mommy makes a salad. We sit down, bless the food and eat while planning the strategy for bedtime. We preheat the oven, everyone upstairs, no baths tonight, we play in Porter's room for a little while, then Daddy reads scriptures. We kneel to pray, we have to remind Porter to be reverent, he folds his arms for a little while, plays some more, then folds his arms again, all the while Ty is scooting all over. Mommy to Daddy: which kid do you want? Daddy: I'll take Ty. Mommy and Porter give Ty kisses and Dad brings him to bed. Mommy reads Porter a book, tucks him in and kisses him good night. He reminds her to leave the light on.
Daddy is in the kitchen putting cookie dough on the cookie sheet. Yum. I go to take a shower. I get ready for bed, we enjoy cookies and milk in bed while we talk about the upcoming week. Good night kisses, pass out, until tomorrow...
